Ashleigh Barty v Danielle Collins Head to Head

Barty, not so surprisingly, holds a 3-1 lead over Collins although, she lost their last encounter.

The match took place in the 2021 WTA Adelaide where the American trumped Barty with 6-3, 6-4.

First Major Final for Collins

Danielle Collins has been absolutely breathtaking in the Australian Open so far. A semifinalist here in 2019, this time around, she made it to the final on the back of some remarkable tennis.

In the opening rounds, she defeated the likes of Caroline Dolehide and Ana Konjuh in straight sets. In round three, she faced the Danish teen prodigy Clara Tauson and knocked her out with 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Then in the fourth round, Collins won another three-set affair – this one against the Belgian Elise Mertens.

Having made it to the second week, the American only improved her game further. After ending the fairytale run of Alize Cornet in the quarterfinals with 7-5, 6-1, she next forced Iga Swiatek into submission.

Collins needed just 78 minutes to tame the former French Open champion with 6-4, 6-1. Not only did she win 78% of the points behind the first serve and committed just 13 unforced errors, but also doled out an impressive 27 winners to Swiatek’s 12. Her aggression remains unmatched and the ability to place the shots precisely has brought her this far.

It has been quite a journey for the 28-year-old, who underwent surgery for endometriosis in April 2021 shortly after her second-round exit in the Miami Open. Up until then, despite playing some beautiful tennis on the tour, she had been battling pain to carry on. She returned to action in the French Open but a post-surgery complication kept her out of action for a few more weeks.

When the World No. 30 finally returned for good at the end of June, there was no stopping her. Collins moved on to clinch the titles at the Palermo International and Silicon Valley Classic, in addition to reaching the semifinal in Budapest and Linz. She ended the year with an impressive tally of 40-15 and a place in the top 30.

Barty on the Verge of Making History

World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty stormed into the Australian Open 2022 final without dropping a single set. In the six matches played so far, the Aussie has lost just 21 games, averaging at 3.5 games per match.

In the semifinal, Barty tamed Madison Keys with 6-1, 6-3, winning a remarkable 86% of the points on the first serve and hitting 20 winners. This performance was pretty much in line with how the 25-year-old has played in Melbourne over the last fortnight.

Barty never seemed to be in any real trouble as she made easy work of players like Lesia Tsurenko, Lucia Bronzetti, Camila Giorgi, Amanda Anisimova, and Jessica Pegula. One more win and she becomes the first Australian in 44 years since Christine O’Neil to win the home Slam.

Barty has established herself at the apex of the WTA Tour over the last few seasons. She has consistently ended the year as the #1 ranked player since 2019. Last year, her tally was at a formidable 42-8 with titles from the Yarra Valley Classic, Miami Open, Stuttgart Open, Wimbledon, and Cincinnati Open.

This season, she won the Adelaide 500 title – singles and doubles – to kickstart the year on a terrific note.

Barty v Collins Prediction and Tip

Barty has the home advantage and a tremendous amount of momentum, all of which make her a heavy favourite. She is not an easy opponent to beat and given her crafty style of play, Collins will need to be smart about it.

Speaking of Collins, she can try to stun her adversary into submission as she has been doing so far in the tournament. However, Barty is in an entirely different league altogether and she will need to bring a lot more than pure grit and power.

That said, if there is a player who can stop Barty in her tracks, it’s the American. We are in for an entertaining affair.
