Carballes Baena Makes a Struggling Start to the Season
His career-best ranking of 71st isn’t too far from his current 75th rank on the ATP charts but Carballes Baena hasn’t had the best start to the year.
At Adelaide in the first week of January, Carballes Baena lost in the first round in straight sets to Laslo Djere and wouldn’t have even qualified for the second Adelaide tournament had it not been for a spate of withdrawals.
After falling to Corentin Moutet in the qualifiers of that tournament, Carballes Baena lost to Benjamin Bonzi in the opener as a lucky loser.
And while he fought hard at the Australian Open, Ricardas Berankis proved to be good enough to edge him out in that opener.
So, while he starts off against an opponent ranked lower than him, it seems like the Spaniard needs to get past his own demons to put up a fight in this opener.
