Musetti Finds his Groove in Pune

Lorenzo Musetti had a rather disappointing start to the 2022 season but has done well to make up for it in Pune.

He arrived for the competition on the back of a two-match losing streak in Adelaide and Australian Open, respectively to Taro Daniel and Alex de Minaur. But here in the Maharashtra Open, the number two seed picked up his first win of the season by knocking out Aleksandar Vukic in three sets.

Starting with a bye into the second round, the 19-year-old had to work hard for this victory. The match went on for a little over two hours and saw the Italian clinch the win with 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3.

Currently ranked World No. 66, Musetti had a breakthrough spell last season. He cracked the top 100 and reached two finals on the Challenger tour. Additionally, he reached the semifinal in Acapulco and Lyon, the fourth-round in the French Open, and the third round in Miami Masters. The youngster also featured in the prestigious Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan where he fell in the robin rounds.

Majchrzak, Yet to Lose a Set

Kamil Majchrzak is on a roll in the competition. The Pole hasn’t dropped a single set, dispatching the likes of Quentin Halys and Jay Clarke in straight sets.

His tally for the year stands at an impressive 4-1 – he won three of those matches (again, in straight sets) in the ATP Cup while in the Australian Open, he made it as far as the second round before losing to Alex de Minaur.

Majchrzak too had a decent spell in 2021 although, it wasn’t as grand as Musetti’s. The 26-year-old was the runner-up in a couple of Challenger tournaments, along with reaching the semifinal in as many events. On the ATP Tour, his sole highlight came in Sofia where he reached the quarterfinal as a qualifier.

Musetti v Majchrzak Prediction and Tip

This is a match that can go either way. Majchrzak has been fairly good this season but Musetti’s overall form is a bit more superior – which also includes his track record against the top 10 players.

The Polish is also more experienced which gives him a slight edge. All in all, we may be looking at a long match.
