Stefano Travaglia v Elias Ymer Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between these two players.

Ymer Stuns Karatsev

Elias Ymer made his way to the quarterfinal after delivering one of the biggest wins of his career yet. He took on the World No. 15 Aslan Karatsev – who recently won the Sydney Open beating Andy Murray in the final – and defeated the Russian in straight sets with 6-2, 7-6(3).

The Swede needed a little over 90 minutes and boasted an impressive 80% first-service win rate, alongside never giving the Russian a chance to break his serve. This win from Ymer follows a three-set affair in the opener against Gian Marco Moroni.

Currently ranked World No. 163, the Swede has also delivered one of his best performances on the ATP Tour yet. The last time had a run like this was in the French Open in 2018 where, having started as a qualifier just like in Pune right now, he reached the second round. Since then, he has spent the majority of his time on the Challenger circuit.

The 25-year-old, boosted by this recent form, will hope to go further than this. His last stint before coming to South-East Asia was in the Australian Open where he fell in the final qualifying round.

Travaglia Downs Bhambri’s Hopes

Stefano Travaglia may be playing some brilliant tennis in the tournament, but he may not be a crowd favourite. In his opening two matches, he has defeated Indian players like Ramkumar Ramanathan and Yuki Bhambri to make it this far.

Against Ramanathan, the match went to three sets but with Bhambri, the Italian was able to finish the job comfortably with 6-3, 6-2.

At the moment, Travaglia is ranked World No. 93 but his season so far hasn’t been that great either. He has lost in the first round of all three ATP events so far albeit, in Sydney, he did win two matches as a qualifier.

On the whole, Travaglia’s pedigree is much superior to Ymer’s. Last season, he won a Challenger event in Sibiu and was also the runner-up in ATP Melbourne 1. He has also got comparatively more exposure in top-tier events than his opponent, which gives him a slight edge.

Travaglia v Ymer Prediction and Tip

Travaglia will start as the odds-on favourite but Ymer is on a roll and is coming with quite a bit of momentum. This game can very well go either way but don’t be surprised if it goes to three sets.
