Elias Ymer v Joao Sousa Head to Head
Sousa has absolutely dominated all of their three encounters thus far, with the last one taking place in the 2019 ATP Bastad. He won that match in three sets.

Ymer Records his Best ATP Run
25-year-old Elias Ymer has reached his first ATP semifinal after knocking out Stefano Travaglia 6-4, 7-6(4) in a little under 90 minutes. This win follows a straight-set result against the top seed, World No. 15 Aslan Karatsev – one of the biggest victories of his career yet.
The Swede has been in a fine form in Pune. After surviving a three-set scare against Gian Marco Moroni in the opener, he found his bearings quickly and made easy work of his subsequent opponents.
Interestingly, this marks the second time he has reached the semifinal on the courts here. The last time was in 2018 when the tournament was a part of the Challenger circuit. Ymer moved on to win that title, which was also his last singles title in any discipline.
Since then, he has reached the final twice – both in Lyon Challenger – but had to settle for the runner-up trophy.
Currently ranked World No. 163, Ymer played in the Australian Open before arriving in India. There, he started as a qualifier (just like in the Maharashtra Open) and lost in the final round to Alejandro Tabilo.

Sousa Taps into his Pedigree
Joao Sousa is having somewhat of a resurgence after incurring a drop in his form over the last few seasons. However, it hasn’t been an easy journey for the Portuguese.
In the opening two matches, he had to fight hard for three sets against the likes of Arjun Kadhe and the number three seed Gianluca Mager to reach the quarterfinals. There, Sousa met Daniel Atlmaier and dispatched the German 6-2, 6-3 to reach the semis.
A former top 30 player with 10 ATP finals to his name (three titles, seven runners-up), the 32-year-old started showing signs of a comeback towards the end of the last season. Sousa was the finalist in a couple of Challenger events in Brest and Helsinki, in addition to reaching the semis in Alicante.
In larger events, World No. 137 didn’t fare that well but now that he has some momentum under his belt, he looks quite determined to change it all. So far this season, Sousa featured in the Melbourne Slam and a Challenger in Quimper. In the former, he fell in the first round after clearing the qualifiers while in the latter, he reached the quarterfinals.
Ymer v Sousa Prediction and Tip
Sousa has the experience and a much superior pedigree than Ymer, making him the odds-on favourite. That said, Ymer is capable of surprises as he has proven already and can give his opponent a good run for his money. All in all, this should prove to be an entertaining affair.
