Lorenzo Sonego v Fernando Verdasco Head to Head

These two players faced each other twice so far with both matches being a few years removed. Verdasco won the first one in 2018 with Sonego winning the latest one in 2019. Both were played on clay.

Sonego Inching Closer to Top 20

Lorenzo Sonego is a very talented tennis player who is capable of grand slam winning type of tennis when he is fully locked in. His problem is that it doesn’t happen that often but his slow progress over the years has still been steady. It’s been so steady that he is on the verge of entering the top 20 without any particular breakout event.

He had a brilliant showing in Rome last year nearly taking out Novak Djokovic but since then he has failed to live up to it. Nonetheless, he has a chance in Buenos Aires, to reach a semifinal on his preferred surface of  clay. The Italian played fairly well this year (6-3) losing out to Cordoba Champion Albert Ramos last week.

In Australia, he lost to Sydney Champion Aslan Karatsev in Sydney and Miomir Kecmanovic in Melbourne. As always with Sonego, it’s a bit of everything. He should be very motivated in Buenos Aires as the draw opened nicely for him but it will depend on his mood, as it always does.

Retirement Far Away for Verdasco

Fernando Verdasco has been playing professional tennis for close to two decades now but the savvy veteran is not showing any signs of retirement. His result have been quite poor recently but Verdasco is not troubled by that or his ranking. The Spaniard continues to travel the world and play events whether they are ATP level events or Challengers.

Rolling back the years a little bit, Verdasco was able to reach a rare quarterfinal at this stage of his career. He played some impressive tennis to take down Hugo Dellien in the first round and Thiago Monteiro in the 2nd round. It’s a good showing from Verdasco who has dipped below 200th in the rankings.

The Spaniard will have a chance to reach the semifinal but it will take an even better effort needed against Sonego. After two tough 3-set matches it’s questionable how much Verdasco has left in the tank but the motivation will be there.

Sonego v Verdasco Prediction and Tip

Lorenzo Sonego and Fernando Verdasco are at very different stages of their careers. Both enjoy playing on the clay but one is quite better at it than the other. Verdasco last posted a winning record on the year in 2018 with each year being a dropoff in output.

This year it’s been better than usual with a 5-3 record but it’s really hard o see how he can defeat Sonego in this one. There is always the danger that Sonego might self destruct as he tends to do occasionally but if he plays a regular match he should have no problem winning this.

Another thing that might help Soengo is the fact that Verdasco played two tough 3-set matches here that certainly drained him. I think all of that combined will allow Sonego to win in two sets. Might be closer than that but I doubt it.

Tip: Sonego to win in straight sets: 4/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
