Jenson Brooksby v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in Newport last year, when Brooksby, won their semi-final in straight sets.

Brooksby Downs Italian Veteran

Brooksby burst on to the scene last year during he North American summer, reaching the final in Newport Beach, the semi-finals in Washington, and the fourth round of the US Open.

One of those players who chose not to travel to Australia last month, instead he began his year playing in a Challenger event in Ohio, where he reached the last eight.

Given a  bye in the first round in Dallas, he began his campaign with a match against the Italian veteran Andreas Seppi, the world 100.

The first set saw the pair swap early breaks, before another dropped serve from the Italian gave the American the advantage.

However, the Italian hit back, breaking the American midway through the second set, and consolidating that to level the match.

However, Brooksby reasserted control when the Italian was broken early in the third set, and, although other break opportunities came and went for both men, that proved to be the difference.

Thompson Upsets Local Seed

Thompson, who beat another veteran, Feliciano Lopez of Spain in straight sets in the first round, caused a minor upset by knocking out the number eight seed, Brandon Nakashima, on Wednesday, a man he had lost to in their two previous meetings last year.

It was a match that saw only one break of serve, although both men had their chances to improve on that in the course of the match.

That break came in the first set, and it went to Thompson when Nakashima was serving to stay in it, the two having spurned a number of opportunities before that.

It was the same story in the second set, but this time, after Thompson had seen two match points saved, it went to a tie-break.

Nakashima then dropped his serve three times, and the Australian sealed the win with no undue alarms.
