Red-Hot Auger-Aliasime Eyes Another Deep Run

After losing all eight of his tour-level finals, World No. 9 Felix Auger-Aliasime finally captured his first in Rotterdam last week, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets and ending more than three years of agony.

The 21-year-old Canadian had reached three finals each in 2019 and 2020 and two in 2021, but hadn’t even won a set in any of those. However, 2022 seems to have a different feel for him. He began the year by leading Canada to its first-ever ATP Cup title and then made a quarterfinal debut at the Australian Open, before his sensational run to title in Rotterdam.

Overall he brings a 12-3 season record to Marseille, a tournament where he reached the final in his last appearance in 2020. Auger-Alissime had looked good in the first four matches that year but ran out of steam in the final against Tsitsipas, losing in straight sets.

He got his revenge against the Greek in the final in Rotterdam on Sunday, demolishing the World No. 4 in a dominant performance.

Coming into the tournament in red-hot form, the Canadian will be a player to beat in Marseille.

Tsonga Dispatches Simon

Three-time Marseille Open champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga began his 2022 campaign with a straight sets drubbing of compatriot Gilles Simon.

Ranked 243rd in the world, the 36-year-old was in command from the very first game of the match. He broke Simon twice in the first set and once in the second for a 6-2, 6-4 win in an hour and 10 minutes. Tsonga served well throughout the match, firing 11 aces and winning 81% points on the back of his first serve. There was just one break point opportunity for Simon in the match, which was saved by Tsonga.

An 18-time tour-level champion, Tsonga has a 24-7 record in Marseille. His three titles came in 2009, 2013 and 2017. He was also a finalist in 2014, but fell to Ernests Gulbis.

With Wednesday’s win, Tsonga improved his 2022 record to 2-2. He was 1-1 in Montpellier and lost in the first round in Rotterdam. Tsonga, who has struggled over the last couple of years, hasn’t won consecutive matches since reaching the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters in 2019. It will be interesting to see if he can end that run in Marseille.
