Marin Cilic v Jiri Vesely Head to Head
In the only one previous meeting between these two players, Cilic had defeated Vesely at the 2015 Madrid Masters.

More so when the Croat won the first set of his second round encounter against Karen Khachnov, who had gone into the match at 4/6 favourite to win it. Unfortunately for Cilic, that’s where his fight ended with his Russian opponent taking him down in three sets.
What Cilic would now want is for a solid showing here for starters, especially given he has Novak Djokovic in his quarter.

Vesely’s Won Just One Round All Year
Having fallen to a world ranking of 121st right now, Vesely’s sole win in the main draw of competitions this year came in Pune. In four other tournaments before this one, he has crashed out in the opening round.
Vesely’s journey to the main draw here in Dubai has also bee fraught with difficulties but he would be glad to have made it through.
The Czech player needed three sets against Lebanon’s Hady Habin before another three-setter including two tie-breakers against Alexei Popyrin were on the cards in the second qualifier.
That he defeated the Aussie despite being a second-favourite should hold him in a good stead but Vesely would know he has his work cut out against the challenge of Cilic.

Cilic should not have too many issues in this and come through in straight sets despite Vesely’s recent fighting showings in the qualifiers of this event.
