Novak Djokovic v Jiri Vesely Head to Head

This is an interesting rivalry with Vesely having won the only previous time they had met. That came in the 2016 Monte-Carlo Masters where Vesely shocked Djokovic in three sets to move into the third round.

They were supposed to face off at the US Open that very year but Vesely withdrew from that match.

Djokovic Stretched but Moves Past Khachanov

It wasn’t the easiest win for Djokovic but he still managed to make it past Karen Khachanov in his second round match in straight sets.

The world number one registered a 6-3, 7-6 (2) victory to register his second win of the season, needing an hour and 39 minutes on court to get there.

Djokovic, who had started off with a straight-set win over Lorenzo Musetti in his opener, got off to the kind of start he needed in the first set. He broke Khachanov in the fourth game and sealed off the set soon after in the ninth. He won all the 14 points on his first serve.

It was in the second the Serb needed to mount bit of a fight as Khachanov broke him back in the eighth game and pushed it into the tie-breaker. Djokovic sealed the deal, however, without much ado and moved to the last eight.

Vesely Shocker for Bautista-Agut

He was 4/1 outsider to win his second round encounter but Vesely not just overcame Roberto Bautista-Agut but did so in fine style as well.

Vesely was on court for a mere hour and 18 minutes as he carved out a 6-2, 6-4 victory over his struggling Spaniard opponent. He broke Bautista Agut thrice in the match but what was even more shocking was what happened on his own serve.

There was just one break-point all match against him and he saved it easily, winning 90% of his first serve point in the entire encounter.

And rather interestingly this win had followed one over Marin Cilic in the first round, having qualified for the competition through the qualifiers. Can he now make work difficult for Djokovic as well?

Djokovic v Vesely Prediction and Tip

While Vesely has done his bit so far this tournament, it seems highly unlike Djokovic would be tested by him. And yet, the games handicap market looks like a tempting one with Vesely at +5.5 sounding like a solid bet.
