Daniil Medvedev v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

Daniil Medvedev took another step towards World No. 1 ranking as he made quick work of Pablo Andujar in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

The Russian needed just 64 minutes to dispatch the Spaniard 6-1, 6-2. He had a dominant start in both the sets, racing to 5-0 and 4-0 leads respectively. He faced just one break point in the match that he saved, and capitalised on four of six breaking chances.

Ranked No. 2 in the world, Medvedev is guaranteed of reaching the top of the rankings if he wins the title in Acapulco.

On Tuesday, he had begun his first-ever Acapulco campaign with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over France’s Benoit Paire.

The 26-year-old is playing for the first time since losing the five-set final against Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open. With Wednesday’s win he improved to 11-2 for the season, having also lost to Ugo Humbert in the season opener at the ATP Cup.

Nishioka Rallies Past Fritz

For a second consecutive day, Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka came back from a set down to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The Japanese, ranked No. 103 in the world, had a tough start to the second round match against the seventh seed Taylor Fritz on Wednesday. But he gained momentum in the second set, breaking Fritz in the last game and forcing the decider. Nishioka broke the American twice in the final set to register a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win in an hour and 57 minutes.

Having come through the qualifiers, Nishioka also scored a come-from-behind win over Feliciano López in the first round, defeating the Spaniard 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.

The 26-year-old lefty, who had brought a dismal 1-5 season record to the tournament, also had to rally from a set down to beat Germany’s Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in the first qualifying round. He was more convincing in the second qualifying round win over Peter Gojowczyk, beating the German in straight sets.
