Rublev Rallies Past Hurkacz

A week after claiming the Marseille title, Andrey Rublev made his way to another final on Friday after the Russian rallied from a set down to defeat Hubert Hurkacz in the semifinal in Dubai.

This was the third consecutive match in the tournament when the second seed had to rebound after losing the first set. Rublev, who began his Dubai challenge, with a straight sets win over Daniel Evans, overturned a one-set deficit against South Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo in the Round of 16 and then against America’s Mackenzie McDonald in the quarterfinals.

On Friday, Hurkacz was off to a fast start, taking the first set without much trouble. The resolute Rublev rebounded in the second; he failed to capitalise on a break point in the middle of the set, but eventually converted in the last game to force the decider.

The third set was another hard-fought affair needing an hour and 10 minutes. Neither was broken in the set, but it was Rublev who dominated the tie-break to seal the contest 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

With the win, the World No. 7 improved to 13-2 for the season and extended his unbeaten streak to eight matches. Rublev had beaten Felix Auger-Aliassime to claim the Marseille title last week.

The 24-year-old will be aiming to win a 10th career title, and a first in Dubai, on Saturday. He was beaten in the semifinals by Aslan Karatsev last year.

Vesely’s Dream Run Continues

World No. 123 Jiri Vesely continued his dream run at the Dubai Open, reaching the final of an ATP 500 tournament for the first time after an epic win over Denis Shapovalov in the semifinal on Friday.

The Czech qualifier, who stunned World No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the quarterfinals on Thursday, needed three hours and 13 minutes to outlast the Canadian 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3). Vesely out-aced Shapovalov 19-7, won 82% points on the back of his first serve and struck 42 winners, two more than the World No. 14, to get a third top 20 win in three days.

Having come into the tournament with a 1-5 season record in the main draws, Vesely eked out two solid three set wins over Lebanon’s Hady Habib and Australia’s Alexei Popyrin to reach the main draw.

He continued his winning run with a first round upset of World No. 24 Marin Cilic and then stunned 2018 champion and World No. 15 Roberto Bautista Agut in the Round of 16. He followed it up with another huge upset, the biggest of his career, as he took down the five-time champion in the last eight stage.

The 28-year-old left-hander has two ATP 250 titles, having won in Auckland in 2015 and in Pune in 2020. Can he add another one on Saturday to cap off a dream week?

Rublev v Vesely Prediction and Tip

It’s a tough one to call. The way Vesely has knocked out four top 25 players, including the No.1, in the last four days, he will fancy his chances in the final. However, Rublev will still be the favourite given his experience and form. Expect the Russian to win in three.
