Wang Coming Off a Fine Run

30-year-old Qiang Wang – 11 years elder to Fernandez, has had an impressive week in Monterrey. Playing under the special exempt rule, the current World No. 116 defeated Dalma Galfi and Mayar Sherif in three sets to reach the quarterfinal.

Last week, she reached the semifinal in Guadalajara after upsetting the likes of Lauren Davis, Harmony Tan, and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. She was ultimately beaten by Marie Bouzkova but in the process, Wang did reach her first semifinal since the WTA Parma last season.

Following the runner-up feat in that Italian event, the former World No. 12 faded from the tennis scene. Her last event of 2021 was the Tokyo Olympics.

Wang returned to the tour in Australia, starting just outside the top 100. While she fell in the qualifiers in Melbourne and Adelaide tune-ups, she did reach the third round in the Slam, upsetting Alison Van Uytvanck and Madison Keys en route.

Although Qiang Wang hasn’t really made it to a Grand Slam final yet, she is still far more experienced and well-versed than her Canadian counterpart.

Fernandez Survives Zheng

Leylah Fernandez found herself in a fiercely-contested battle to reach the final eight. Facing Qinwen Zheng of China, the number two seed needed two hours and 43 minutes to bag the win with 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(3).

In the opener, Fernandez had a much better time as she moved past Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-2, 6-2.

Unlike Wang, the 19-year-old hasn’t had that great a time on the tour this season. Before coming to Mexico, she participated in a couple of tournaments in Australia where she fell to Iga Swiatek and Madison Inglis in the early stages.

Since her runner-up feat at the Flushing Meadows, Fernandez’s best run on the circuit came at the Indian Wells where she reached the round of 16.

Fernandez v Wang Prediction and Tip

Fernandez, as the world number 21, will start as the odds-on favourite. However, Wang’s chances of winning this one are quite high – given her experience and recent form. This one can quite likely go to three sets where the winner is anyone’s call.

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
