Sorana Cirstea v Dayana Yastremska Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Yastremska Delivers an Inspiring Performance

Less than 10 days ago, 21-year-old Dayana Yastremska fled war-torn Ukraine with her 15-year-old sister after spending two nights in an underground car park. Leaving her parents and family behind, she made her way to Romania.

Now, she has reached the semifinal in the Lyon Open after a series of whirlwind wins and emotional turbulence.

Yastremska saved a match point in each of the last two sets in her opening match against Ana Bogdan. The current World No. 140 took the match 3-6, 7-6(7), 7-6(7) to play Cristina Bucsa in the next round. This one was far easier as she stormed into the quarterfinal with 6-2, 6-3.

In the elite eight, she ran into Jasmine Paolini and tamed her in straight sets with 6-4, 7-6(3).

A former World No. 21, Yastremska was pegged to reach new heights before a provisional doping suspension derailed her career in 2021. She returned to the tour only in July after the ban was lifted and has since sought to get back.

She arrived in Lyon following a quarterfinal stint in Dubai as a qualifier, where she beat the likes of Clara Tauson, Irina-Camelia Begu, and Barbora Krejcikova.

Cirstea, on a Roll

Sorana Cirstea has hardly been troubled on her way to the final four in Lyon. Yet to drop a set, the number two seed – who is 10 years elder to Yastremska, made easy work of her competition.

In the opener, she dispatched Mariam Bolkvadze and followed it with similar clinical wins over Stefanie Vogele and Anna Bondar.

Looking at Cirstea’s season so far, it has been quite erratic. In the six events played so far – including the Lyon Open – the world number 30 has made it past the second round only twice. The first time it happened was in the Australian Open where she overcame the likes of Petra Kvitova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova en route to the fourth round.

Last year, Cirstea had a terrific run having made it to two WTA finals (one title) and reaching the fourth round in the French Open and third-round in the Wimbledon.

Cirstea v Yastremska Prediction and Tip

This has all the makings of being a three-setter. Having made it this far and sacrificed so much, Yastremska won’t give up easily. She has the skillset – if she manages to retain her focus on-court, she may very well reach the final.

Cirstea, on her part, has the experience needed to win this one but she will need to work hard.
