Fernandez Improves to 4-0 in Semifinals

Defending champion Leylah Fernandez is one win away from a second consecutive Monterrey Open title after the Canadian hustled past Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia in the semifinals on Saturday.

Fernandez, who beat Viktorija Golubic for the crown last year, dominated the semifinal from start to finish. The 19-year-old needed just an hour and 12 minutes for a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

The World No. 21, who saved the only break point that she faced in the match, broke her opponent twice in the first set and once in the second. She is now unbeaten in the past nine matches in Monterrrey and has an overall record of 11-1, which also includes a quarterfinal finish in 2020.

Fernandez, who had not played much this season before the start of this tournament, began her Monterrey campaign with with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Anna Karolína Schmiedlová. She  then laboured to a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) win against China’s Qinwen Zheng in the second round, and then battled past another Chinese Wang Qiang 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

With Saturday’s win, Fernandez is now 4-0 in semifinals and on Sunday will aim for her second WTA title. She had finished runner-up in her first final Acapulco in 2020 and also finished runner-up in her first major final at the U.S. Open last year. A stunning, power-packed performance saw the Canadian set-up a surprise final against Britain’s Emma Raducanu, but was beaten by the latter in the title clash at Flushing Meadows.

Osorio Ends Parrizas-Diaz’s Run

It was a bit of an easier day for fifth seed Camila Osorio, who knocked out No. 6 seed Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in straight sets in the semifinals on Saturday.

Osorio, who showed her incredible ability to fight during her two-hour-and-35-minute quarterfinal win over top seed Elina Svitolina, needed just an hour and 30 minutes to dispatch the Spaniard in the semifinal.

The Colombian was broken in the very first game of the match, but she clawed her way back into the contest, breaking Parrizas-Diaz in the sixth game and then again in the 10th game to close out the set. Osorio missed out on six break points in the last game of the set before converting the sixth to win the set.

The World No. 44 was broken in the first game of the second set as well, with the set beginning with four consecutive breaks of serve. Osorio broke again to go 5-3 up, but could not close out the match as the Spaniard broke back. The Colombian, however, broke once again in the very next game to take the contest 6-4, 6-4.

Osorio is now into her third WTA final. She was a champion at home in Bogota and a runner-up in Tenerife last year.

She had begun the tournament by defeating Poland’s Magdalena Fręch 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) in the first round and Mexico’s Marcela Zacarías 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 in the second before having to dig deep to beat Svitolina 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) in the quarterfinal on Friday.
