Nadal Prevails In Kyrgios Battle

With the Melbourne ATP 250, Aussie Open and Mexican Open titles in the bag already for 2022, Rafael Nadal extended his unbeaten run to 19 matches this season as he made the final four here at Indian Wells, looking all set to add to the title count again this weekend.

It was not an easy encounter in the quarters as he was up against the man who has always caused him some trouble, i.e Aussie Nick Kyrgios.

Kyrgios was off to a flier breaking Nadal early and serving extremely well as he was up 5-4 looking to close out the set. Scoreboard pressure and the genius of Nadal got the better of the Aussie as he was broken serving for the set and then imploded in the tiebreak for a 0-7 loss.

Kyrgios kept the focus going in the second set, serving well and looking to put pressure on the Nadal serve.

Serving to stay in the set at 5-6, the 21-time slam winner erred and the Aussie jumped on it to set up two set points and then an incredible point played by Kyrgios sealed the set for him.

Kyrgios had his chances to break early in the decider, but Nadal’s experience showed as he dug deep to hold on.

Distracted by the crowd between the first and second serve, the Aussie lost his composure half way through the set and there was no looking back for Nadal from there.

Nadal’s start is the third longest on the tour since ATP tour records were introduced in 1990. Novak Djokovic went 41-0 in 2011 and then had a 26-0 start in 2020.

The former world number one is in his 11th semi-final here at Indian Wells and will be looking for a title run this weekend.

Alcaraz Uproots Title Holder Norrie

18-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz continued his strong run since the Aussie Open five set loss to Matteo Berrettini winning his ninth match in a row.

Since the Aussie Open, Alcaraz has lifted the ATP 500 title in Rio, won his Davis Cup singles against Romania and been on a strong run of form here at Indian Wells.

With convincing wins against the likes of Roberto Bautista Agut and Gael Monfils, Alcaraz came up against defending champion Cameron Norrie in the final eight.

Both players were off to a tentative start exchanging breaks but then settled into rhythm hitting some scintillating winners down the line. While Alcaraz broke again late in the set, this time he managed to hold on and close the set 6-4.

Defending champion Norrie got off to the better start in the second, breaking early, but then had an abdominal niggle that needed attention and impaired his movement.

The young Spaniard continued putting pressure and broke back twice for a straight sets win coasting into the semi-final setting up an exciting clash against none other than Rafa Nadal.

Nadal v Alcaraz Prediction and Tip

This first semi-final makes or an exciting match between the ‘ all-time great’ and the one earmarked for great things.

Expect a close contest with some scintillating points but eventually the experience of Nadal will see him through in a deciding third set.
