Paula Ormaechea v Irina Bara Head to Head
In their only previous encounter which came in Karlsruhe, Bara defeated Ormaechea in three sets to move into the second round.

It’s been years obviously but the former world number 59 Ormaechea is a finalist at this tournament and what she would hope for is a showing that matches that performance from the past.
The Argentine has now fallen to 146th in the world but even that is an improvement on where she began the season at. Ormaechea was 212th in the world but went on to make it to finals of three tournaments on the ITF circuit, including two on clay.
Her most recent appearance came in mid-March when she was a losing finalist at the Anapoima ITF competition, following on from another final on the clay courts of Tucuman.
This will obviously be a step-up for Ormaechea who last won a main draw match on the WTA tour in July 2021 – reaching the Budapest Open quarterfinals as a qualifier. Can she win another here?

Bara Needs to Up the Ante
At the best of times, Bara’s performances on surfaces other than clay aren’t the best but things have looked far worse this season.
Bara is yet to win a main draw match at the WTA level in 2022 and in three of those competitions, she went out in the qualifiers as well. Making it worse is her record on clay this season, with just one win from three matches coming her way.
Those two defeats came on the ITF circuit and in a WTA125 tournament, making things difficult for Bara.
She now comes up against a player who is ranked way lower than her and yet in somewhat of a better form at the lower circuit. No surprises then that Bara will find it difficult here.
