Mirjam Bjorklund v Tatjana Maria Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 24-year old Swede, and the German, who is ten years older.

Bjorklund Seldom Seen At This Level

Bjorklund’s achievements have principally come on the ITF tour, where she reached three finals in 2021, two of them on clay, winning a tournament in Belgium last August.

A month earlier she had won a 125k doubles event as well in Bastad, Sweden, also on clay.

She had failed to qualify for a senior WTA event this year prior to Bogota, but avoided the perils of qualifying by being given an automatic entry into the main draw.

Her campaign began with a match against the Mexican, Renate Zarazua, the world number 171, an opponent she found to her liking, because she dropped just four games in beating her.

Yuliana Lizarazo of Colombia was the next woman she faced, Bjorklund starting a heavy favourite against the world number 537.

The match began with three dropped service games, after which sequence, Bjorklund had her nose in front. Two more breaks earned her the set.

Lizarazo hit back by breaking the Swede at the start of the second set, but showed her lack of experience by allowing Bjorklund to break back, and, serving to stay in the match, the Colombian found the pressure too great and was broken again.

Maria Eyeing Another Swedish Scalp

Maria has been ranked as high as 54 in the world, and has also won a senior WTA title, and that was on clay in Mallorca, four years ago.

Her career had been in the doldrums for several years, but she indicated that she may be finding some form again by winning an ITF event in February in the US, also on clay.

The German’s only previous main draw appearance on the WTA tour this year had been at the Australian Open, where she lost in the first round to Maria Sakkari.

But she came through qualifying, and then overwhelmed Maria Lourdes Carle in their match, dropping just three games to the Argentinian.

In the second round she met another Swede in the form of Rebecca Peterson, the world number 80.

Maria breezed through the third set, dropping just one game and breaking the Peterson serve three times.

The Swede made more of a contest of it in the second, but she was broken again midway through it, and Maria was able from then on to just close out the match.

Bjorklund v Maria Prediction and Tip

Bjorklund is the higher ranked player, but it is Maria who has the greater pedigree in WTA events, and the German will start the favourite.
