Pigossi Finds a New String to Her Bow

Pigossi’s biggest claim to fame was her doubles bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but with a career-best singles ranking of 185th in the world, not much had been expected out of her coming into this singles tournament.

Not even when she won back to back matches in the qualifiers to enter the main draw, something she hadn’t managed to do since 2016.

What followed is a string of results that not too many would have thought possible.

Wins over Harmony Tan (1/2 odds to win it), Ekaterina Gorgodze (10/11), Dayana Yastremska (7/50) and Maria Osorio Serrano (1/5) speak volumes about the drastic change in Pigossi’s fortunes.

So much so, Pigossi would now harbour hopes of something much more special, something she might not have imagined in the wildest of her dreams – joining the ranks of those elite few by winning a WTA title.

Up against her is a more experienced but a lower-ranked qualifier.

Maria Inching Towards Doubling WTA Title Count

Much like her opponent in this encounter, Maria’s recent record at the highest level hasn’t been the best. And that can be seen from the manner in which she has fallen down the rankings ladder to 237th in the world.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is Maria was down to 311th earlier this season and even without winning this one, will be propped up to 135th on the charts.

What makes for an even more interesting reading is Maria’s performance all tournament. Other than dropping a set in the qualifiers of this competition, Maria’s done nothing to suggest she is ranked outside the top 200.

And in the four matches in the main draw so far, Maria has dropped just 17 games which has included a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kamilla Rakhimova in the semifinals.

Can Maria now put one across Pigossi and make it her second career WTA title?

Pigossi v Maria Prediction and Tip

We are looking at a Maria win here with the German player starting out a 1/2 favourite to clinch it. Her experience and form leading into this one make us believe a straight-set win looks to be in the offing.
