Andrey Rublev v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

Fognini leads 5-4, but Rublev has been the dominant one recently. They met thrice last year and Rublev won all three of them.

They have met thrice on clay, with Fognini winning twice and Rublev on one occasion, but it will be their first meeting on clay since the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2019.

Rublev Eases Past Daniel

Andrey Rublev is back in the semifinal of an ATP tournament after a couple of poor results in the last two tournaments. The Russian player knocked out Japan’s Taro Daniel in straight sets to reach the final four in Serbia.

Ranked No. 8 in the world, the second seed needed just an hour and 16 minutes to beat the Japanese player 6-3, 6-3. Rublev dropped just 10 points on his serve in the match. He saved the only break point that he faced and converted three of seven.

Friday’s quarterfinal win comes a day after Rublev scored a tough comeback win over Jiri Lehecka, beating the Czech player 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 in over two hours.

The win improved Rublev to 21-5 for the season. It is the first time in over a month that he has won two matches in a row. He was knocked out in the round of 64 in Miami and the Round of 16 in Monte-Carlo. But before those two setbacks, he was in sensational form in the earlier part of the year, winning back-to-back titles in Marseille and Dubai and reaching the semifinals in Rotterdam and Indian Wells.

Into a fifth semifinal this year, can the 24-year-old reach a third final of the season?

Fognini Overcomes Otte

Italy’s Fabio Fognini had a tough start to his quarterfinal match on Friday, trailing Germany’s Oscar Otte 2-5 in the first set, but the World no. 62 made a solid comeback, winning five games in a row to take the first set.

The Italian also began the second set by winning the first two games, but Otte pulled the break back to draw level at 2-2. The Italian restored the advantage by breaking again in the seventh game and then held on for a 7-5, 6-4 victory.

This will be the second time this season when Fognini will be featuring in the semifinals. The 34-year-old, who improved his season record to 11-6 with Friday’s win, had featured in the final four in Rio in February.

He hasn’t reached a final since winning the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2019, which was his ninth title from 19th final. Can he pull of a surprise on Saturday and march into the finals again?

Rublev v Fognini Prediction and Tip

With Rublev regaining his form in the tournament he will be a difficult player to beat on Saturday. Expect the Russian to advance to the final.
