Djokovic Extends Dominance Over Wawrinka

Novak Djokovic reached a 16th consecutive quarterfinal at the Italian Open, defeating old rival Stan Wawrinka in the third round in Rome on Thursday.

The top seed is now one win away from retaining the No. 1 ranking. A loss in the quarterfinal won’t help his cause though as he would then lose the no. 1 spot to Daniil Medvedev.

Broken just once by the Swiss on Thursday, Djokovic converted five of seven break points to win the contest 6-2, 6-2 in just 75 minutes and extend his head-to-head lead in the rivalry to 20-6.

The Serb dominated the first set, dropping just four points on his serve. He was tested a bit in the second with Wawrinka creating four break points and capitalising on one of those chances, but the 20-time Grand Slam champion broke thrice in the set to win with ease.

A five-time champion and six-time finalist in Rome, Djokovic improved to 61-10 at the Italian Open. The 34-year-old, who is 9-4 in 2022, had begun his campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Aslan Karatsev.

Djokovic, who was a finalist in the last three editions in Rome, is chasing a 38th Masters title this week.

Auger-Aliassime Eases Past Giron

After scoring a tough come-from-behind victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round on Tuesday, Felix Auger-Aliassime scored a convincing straight sets win over Marcos Giron in the third round on Thursday.

The win put the World no. 9 into a fourth straight quarterfinal. Auger-Aliassime had made it to the last eight in Barcelona, Estoril and Madrid, but couldn’t make it to the final four in any of them. This is the first time he has made it this far in Rome.

The 21-year-old, who won his maiden title in Rotterdam earlier this year and also reached a 10th tour-level final in Marseille, needed just an hour and 29 minutes to beat the World no. 59, 6-3, 6-2 on Thursday. Auger-Aliassime won 84% points on his first serve, converted half of the eight break points that he held and saved two of three break points that he faced.

The Canadian had rallied from a set down to beat Davidovich Fokina 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in a three-hour-plus match on Tuesday.
