World No. 33 Elise Mertens will be playing for the first time since retiring from her opening round match in Istanbul, while trailing against Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson.
Mertens was forced to retire with a leg injury and since then she hasn’t featured in any of the tournaments. But she returns to action in Strasbourg as the fourth seed.
The Belgian, who will be making her debut in the tournament, has lost her last three matches.
The last time she won a match was over Marta Kostyuk in the second round of the Indian Wells Open. Since then she lost in the third round to Daria Saville and then was defeated in her opening match in Miami before having to retire from Istanbul.
A six-time winner from 10 WTA finals, Mertens is 2-3 in clay court finals. She has a 68% win record on clay and will be looking to improve that record in Strasbourg.

Can Monnet Deliver at the Top Level?
Carole Monnet will be making her singles debut in Strasbourg. She made her WTA debut in doubles in Lausanne last year.
The 20-year-old, world no. 266 received a wild card for the event. She has a 6-6 record in ITF finals and reached her only clay court final earlier this year in Antalya, finishing runner-up in the tournament.
She also reached a final in Monastir this year, but finished runner-up in that tournament as well.
Monnet is 15-15 from all matches this season and 7-7 on clay courts. On the tour, she lost in the first qualifying round in Stuttgart and in the second qualifying round of the WTA 125 in Saint-Malo.
