Maryna Zanevska seemed to have hit form at just the right time this past week at the WTA 125K event in Saint-Malo. Unfortunately, the Belgian retired from her semifinal match against Haddad Maia whilst trailing 5-0 in the first set.
It is the fourth time this season that Zanevska has either withdrawn or retired from a tournament due to injury. It is hard luck considering that she is playing some of her best tennis at the age of 28 and just made great strides in the rankings.
The Belgian is sitting at a career-high World No. 66, bolstered by her breakout year in 2021 which yielded a maiden WTA title on the clay courts of Gdynia. She also won two more titles on the ITF circuit and is a player who loves the dirt more than hard courts.
Zanevska will be looking to fine-tune her game in preparation for the French Open which starts in a week’s time. She hasn’t played the clay Slam since 2018 when she fell in the qualifying rounds.

Zhang Looks To Bounce Back From Rome Shocker
Zhang Shuai looked lost and only managed to win two games as she was completely blown away by Aryna Sabalenka’s unrelenting power at the Italian Open.
While defeat to the Belarusian was expected, Zhang will be in buoyant mood when she returns to France. The Chinese woman captured her fourth tour-level title of her career on the indoor hard courts of Lyon earlier this year, so she holds fond memories in these parts.
At 33, Zhang has made one more dash towards the Top 50 where she sits at No. 42. The former Strasbourg quarterfinalist is 2-4 for the season on clay, losing to the likes of Sabalenka, Simona Halep, and Ekaterina Alexandrova. So, clearly, her level of competition has been substantially harder to navigate.
Seeded at No.5 this week, Zhang will have the opportunity to make her presence felt in the main draw of the WTA 250 event in the North East of France.

Zanevska has been extremely unfortunate with injuries and she is the kind of player who has yet to fulfill her vast potential. But if she has fully recovered then I expect her to hold the edge over the Chinese woman.
