Gasquet Continues to March On

Two days after taking out the top seed and World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev in the second round, Richard Gasquet breezed past Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak in straight sets on Thursday to reach his first semifinal of the season.

The Frenchman, who is chasing a 16th career title, won 95% points on the back of his first delivery, saved the only break point that he faced and broke his opponent thrice to win the one-hour-and-28 minute contest 6-2, 6-4.

Gasquet didn’t drop a set in the first two rounds either. The 35-year-old defeated John Millman 6-3, 6-1 in the first round and then got the second biggest win of his career, in terms of rankings, defeating Medvedev 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

Gasquet, who had beaten Roger Federer in Monte-Carlo in 2005 when the Swiss was World No. 1, has now recorded 35 top-10 wins, becoming only the 10th active male player to achieve the feat.

Gasquet’s season record improved to 11-8 following Thursday’s win. On Friday, he will aim to reach a 33rd tour-level final and a first since his runner-up finish in Umag last year.

Sousa Battles Past Ivashka

Joao Sousa is two wins away from a second title of the season. The Portuguese player, who won the Pune Open title in February, defeated Ilya Ivashka in the quarterfinals of the Geneva Open on Thursday.

Having broken early in the first set, Ivashka looked to be cruising at 2-4 when Sousa began the turnaround, winning three games in a row and then breaking for a second time in the last game to seal the first set.

Pegged back, the Belarusian raced to a 0-3 lead in the second set with two breaks of serve. Sousa got a break back the next game only to see Ivashka restore a two break advantage in the next game.

The Portuguese wasn’t ready to give up though, he won four consecutive games to send the match back on serve. He missed out on two match points in the 10th game, but got three more opportunities to seal the contest in the 12th. Sousa eventually converted the fifth match point in the match to win 7-5, 7-5.

Sosa too hasn’t dropped a set this week. He beat Pablo Andujar in the first round and Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second. Can he keep his run going?
