Stephens on a Five-Match Losing Streak

It’s been a bizarre sort of a season for Stephens, who has won a title already but at the same time now enters this edition of the French Open on the back of five losses in a row.

She has lost six of her previous seven matches in fact and that was a streak that began at the end of the Guadalajara Open, a tournament Stephens had gone on to win.

Her only win during this time came in the first round of Miami Open but was quickly followed by a defeat at the hands of Jessica Pegula. And she went through a four-match losing streak after that on clay.

All her clay court campaigns, at Charleston, Madrid, Rome and Strasbourg, ended with first round losses and she enters the French Open in a desperate need to turn things around. She has a qualifier up against her first up but one who has form on her side.

Niemeier in Search of Elusive WTA Tour Win

It’s been quite a while since Niemeier won a main draw match on the WTA tour, what with her Chicago Open quarterfinal appearance last year in September being the last time that happened.

Niemeier has since then featured in a plethora of WTA tournaments but not won a match and her only favourable results have come on the ITF circuit. A title win Zagreb late last month should give her a lot of confidence as well.

Coming into the French Open qualifiers, Niemeier would have given herself a decent shout of making it to the main draw given her ranking and form.

What she did was a showing of unparalleled nature from her own self – spread across the three matches, Niemeier dropped just seven games and sealed off her main draw berth with ease.

Can she put it across Stephens too?

Stephens v Niemeier Prediction and Tip

While Stephens is a higher-ranked player, it’s Niemeier who starts off a 11/25 favourite to win this and inflict her opponent a sixth successive loss. And we will have to back Niemeier to clinch this.
