Viktorija Golubic v Katie Volynets Head to Head
There is no head to head record as the players meet for the first time.
Golubic in Need of Wins
Golubic arrives in Paris with hope that she can turn around her season and get back to form that took her to a career high ranking of 35 in February.
The current world number 53 had a stunning 2021 season in which she finished 46-21. It included a brilliant quarterfinal run in Wimbledon and finishing runner up in Lyon and Monterrey as a qualifier.
Her favourite surface is not clay as her forehand is not strong. She is 2-4 on clay this season and managed to find two wins in Strasbourg last week against Fiona Ferro and Yana Morderger.
The best result Golubic has achieved in Roland Garros was reaching the second round in 2016. She has a poor history in Paris with many first round exits and making any sort of run here seems bleak.
Volynets the Favourite in Round One
American player Katie Volynets takes part in the tournament for the first time. She is currently the world number 135 and is ranked 23 places below her career best ranking.
Hard court is the preferred surface for Volynets, however she has compiled a 11-4 record on clay this season. She has mainly played ITF 60 events under that record.
Volynets won the Palm Harbor ITF title and reached the semifinal of Bonita Springs ITF event, both in the span of last two months.
She is technically very astute and is equally good off her forehand and backhand. She doesn’t make too many unforced errors but she doesn’t have a strong serve to dominate her 1st serve points.
Golubic v Volynets Prediction and Tip
Golubic faces a very tricky opening battle as she is not playing with confidence and faces a player who has been in good form on clay. Volynets will feel she has the better draw and will relish this opportunity to make a mark.
