Basilashvili Saves a MP in Epic Comeback Win

Nikoloz Basilashvili snatched victory from the jaws of defeat as the Georgian scored an incredible comeback win over the United States’ Maxime Cressy in the first round on Monday.

The Georgian, who withstood 42 aces from the big-serving American in the match, was outplayed in the first two sets. He didn’t allow Cressy to break in the third set and then saved a Match Point in the third-set tiebreak before edging the set and staying in the contest.

The momentum shifted from that point on and Basilashvili didn’t face another break point in the match, while he broke the World No. 62 once in each of the last two sets to score a 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4, 6-4 victory.

The three-hour-and-20 minute win saw Basilashvili hit 37 fewer aces than his opponent. He also struck 11 fewer winners than Cressy’s 70, but made a lot fewer errors than the American. Cressy double faulted 19 times and made 38 unforced errors. Basilshvili on the other hand had 7 double faults and 27 unforced errors.

This is only the third time that the Georgian has made it past the first round at the French Open, where he is making his eighth main draw appearance. Having won his opening match for the fifth consecutive tournament, Basilashvili will now be hoping to win consecutive matches for the first time since his run to the final in Doha in February.

McDonald Overcomes Slow Start to Advance

Mackenzie McDonald overcame a slow start to defeat Italian lucky loser Franco Agamenone and advance to a third consecutive Round of 64 at Roland Garros.

McDonald, who has a 33% win record on clay, began the match by breaking the Italian, but got outplayed in the rest of the set as Agamenone won the next six games to take the first set.

The 27-year-old American turned the tables in the next set and then surged ahead in the third. Agamenone gave a tough fight in the fourth set, but eventually the American won 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in two hours and 46 minutes.

While McDonald converted seven of eight break points, his opponent could convert just 6 of 15. The American struck 52 winners and made 47 unforced errors while Agamenone hit 33 winners and made 24 unforced errors in the match.

Basilashvili v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Although he lost to McDonald earlier this season, Basilashvili will definitely back himself on clay. He has a far superior record than McDonald on dirt and has won three of his five titles on the surface. Expect the Georgian to advance into the third round.
