Felix Auger-Aliassime v Camilo Ugo Carabelli Head to Head
This will be a first meeting between the two.
Auger-Aliassime Survives a First Round Scare
World No. 9 Felix-Auger Aliassime was on the brink of elimination in the opening round, after he lost the first two sets against Peruvian qualifier Juan Pablo Varillas, but the Canadian raised his level over the course of the match to avoid a third consecutive first round exit at the French Open.
The Canadian, who had lost both his previous matches at Roland Garros, finally got his first victory on the clay court major, beating Varillas 2-6, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 in three hours and 14 minutes.
Auger-Alissime out-aced the Peruvian 14-2 and struck 52 winners in all against Varillas’ 23. The 21-year-old, however made 44 unforced errors in the match, 15 more than his opponent.
The Canadian, who converted five of eight break points and saved five of nine, didn’t hold a single break point in the first two sets. The tables turned in the next three as he didn’t face a single break point the last three sets.
Auger-Alissime, who picked up his maiden ATP title in Rotterdam earlier this year and also finished runner-up in Marseille, improved to 24-12 this season.
Ugo Carabelli Stuns Karatsev
World No. 155 Camilo Ugo Carabelli made a winning start to his senior career on Sunday as he stunned World no. 41 Aslan Karatsev in the opening round.
Making his Grand Slam debut, Ugo Carabelli squandered a one-set lead twice but eventually became the first men’s player ever to win a deciding set tie-break at the French Open. The 22-year-old won the super-tiebreak to oust Karatsev 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (10-5) in a four-hour-and-17-minute contest.
Ugo Carabelli had qualified for the main draw after beating Yūichi Sugita, Ernesto Escobedo and Alexander Ritschard in the qualifying rounds.
A good player on clay courts, Carabelli has won two Challenger and four Futures titles.
