John Isner struck 23 aces and 51 winners as he saw off local hope Grégoire Barrère in four sets to move into the third round at Roland Garros for the eighth time in his career.
Isner, who had held off another Frenchman, Quentin Halys in four sets in the first round, has a total of 50 aces from the first two matches.
While the opener was a bit tough as Halys matched Isner’s big serving capabilities, but after surviving the three-hour-and-20-minute opening round contest Isner looked better in the second round. At least he took just two hours and 25 minutes to beat Barrère 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5). Isner has now won four-tiebreaks in the tournament.
The World No. 26, who lost in the Houston final this year, has improved to 13-11 this year. He will now be aiming to reach the Round of 16 for the fourth time at the Paris major.

Zapata Miralles’ Dream Run Continues
Qualifier Bernabe Zapata Miralles stunned 13th seed Taylor Fritz in the second round on Wednesday to move into the Round of 32 for the first time at a Grand Slam event.
The Spaniard, ranked No. 131st in the world, overturned a first set deficit to beat the reigning Indian Wells champion and the World No. 14, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.
Zapata Miralles had begun the tournament with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, 7-5 win over another American, Michael Mmoh
The 25-year-old has enjoyed a great 10 days in Paris. He qualified for the main draw last week with wins over Dudi Sela, Gastão Elias and Luca Nardi.
Wednesday’s win was Zapata Miralles’s fifth tour-level main draw win of the season and fourth on clay. Last year, the 25-year-old had lost in the opening round of his Roland Garros debut.
Against Fritz, Zapata Miralles converted 9 of 11 break points and saved seven of 13. He lost a roller-coaster first set, but controlled the rest of the match.

Isner has not reached a fourth round at a major since reaching the last eight at the U.S. Open in 2018, so he will be desperate to reach one on Friday.
