Badosa Survives Scare

World No. 4 Paula Badosa was stretched by Strasbourg finalist Kaja Juvan in the second round of the French Open on Thursday, but the third seed survived to march on.

Badosa, who made it to the fourth round on her Roland Garros debut in 2020 and reached the quarterfinals last year, is now one win away from a third consecutive last 16 at the clay court major.

On Thursday, the 24-year-old was given a tough fight by the Slovenian in the first two sets. Badosa had raced to a 5-2 lead in the second, before Juvan came back to draw level. She eventually lost the set, but forced the decider with a solid second set. She even began the third with a break of serve, but then Badosa took control and raced to a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win in two hours and  17 minutes.

Badosa converted 6 of 9 break points and saved half of the eight that she faced in the match.

The Spaniard, who won the Sydney Tennis Classic this year and reached the semifinals in Indian Wells and Stuttgart and the last eight in Miami and Charleston, had begun her campaign with a straight sets drubbing of France’s Fiona Ferro. She will be hoping to continue her good work in the third round.

Kudermetova  Eases Past Qualifier

After overcoming China’s Zhu Lin in three sets in the opening round, World No. 29 Vernika Kudermetova ousted Serbian qualifier Aleksandra Krunić in straight sets in the second round on Thursday.

Kudermetova served 8 aces and struck 22 winners to win the contest 6-3, 6-3. The 69-minute contest saw the Russian break the Serbian’s serve four times, while she got broken just once in the match.

Kudermetova had needed two hours and 22 minutes to beat Zhu 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round.

Thanks to Thursday’s win Kudermetova is into the third round of the French Open for the second time in her fourth attempt. She has never made it to the fourth round of a major. Can she do it on Saturday?

A semifinalist at the Australian Open, Kudermetova has been in sensational form this year, finishing runner-up in Melbourne, Dubai and Istanbul. She also reached four doubles finals this year, winning in Dubai and Rome and finishing runner-up in Qatar and Miami.

Badosa v Kudermetova Prediction and Tip

Badosa has comfortably won both their previous meetings this year. But given Kudermetova’s form this season, she will be wary of the Russian. Expect a hard-fought contest with Badosa edging through.
