Fernandez Wins Another Three-Setter

After knocking out 14th seed Belinda Bencic in three, Leylah Fernandez won another thrilling three-setter on Sunday to march into the quarterfinals of the French Open for the first time in her career.

The 2021 U.S. Open finalist, who has become a much-improved player on hard courts, had not had much success on clay before, but this is the tournament where she has proved her ability to thrive on dirt.

Fernandez’s shot-making ability was on full display Sunday as she defeated American Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in an hour and 54 minutes.

The Canadian, who had beaten Kristina Mladenovic and Kateřina Siniaková in straight sets in the first two rounds, respectively, needed a third set turnaround to beat Bencic in the third round.

In the fourth round against Anisimova, the 19-year-old built a 4-0 and 5-1 lead in the first set, before the American made a comeback bid, but Fernandez somehow managed to keep the one break advantage, as she converted a fifth set point to take the first set.

It was Anisimova, who surged ahead in the second set, going up a break early, only to see Fernandez pull the break back in the ninth game, but Anisimova broke back immediately to force the decider.

Fernandez dominated the third, saving all three break points that she faced and converting two of three to win the contest. The World No. 18 is 16-7 this season and has already won a title in Monterrey.

Trevisan Knocks Out Sasnovich

World No. 59 Martina Trevisan continued her super run at Roland Garros with a fourth consecutive straight sets win on Sunday.

The Italian left-hander, who was a quarterfinalist at the Paris major in 2020, will now get a second chance to reach a maiden semifinal at a Grand Slam.

While Trevisan breezed past her first three opponents without breaking a sweat, she had to battle past Sasnovich in a two-hour contest in the Round of 16.

Trevisan converted 6 of 14 break points and saved two of seven that she faced to win the match 7-6 (12-10), 7-5.

The Italian has been in outstanding form over the last two weeks. Sunday’s win was her ninth consecutive win, eight of which have come in straight sets. Her streak began in Rabat, where she went on to pick her maiden WTA title. She will be looking to keep her form going in the quarterfinal.

Fernandez v Trevisan Prediction and Tip

Both the lefties are in great form right now. While Fernandez is the seeded player, she will be wary of Trevisan’s current streak. Expect an exciting contest with Fernandez edging past the Italian.
