Tommy Paul v Brandon Nakashima Head to Head

No previous matches have been played at the highest level between these two except at the Challenger level. That came in 2019 and on the hard courts of Cary, Paul registered a straight-set win over Nakashima.

Paul Poor on Clay

A change to grass would have come as a huge relief for Paul after the kind of clay swing he had earlier this year.

The American featured in six clay court competitions this season and won a mere two matches at them – defeating the struggling Peter Gojowczyk in Houston and surprised the match favourite Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

Following this, he went on a three-match losing streak, something he would be looking to surmount in this encounter.

This was after Paul looked to have begun well earlier in the year, having won successive matches at all but one of his seven hard court competitions. His experience on grass, however, is very little.

The world number 39 is yet to win a main draw match on this surface, having even failed to qualify for Wimbledon last year.

Can he turn things around after his clay court issues and lack of grass court experience?

Nakashima Coming off Surbiton Practice

As far as confidence goes, Nakashima would be feeling just about right coming into this opening round encounter. And that’s to do with both, how he finished off his clay court engagements for the season and his appearance at the Surbiton Challenger on grass.

Nakashima was the second favourite going into both his first two round matches at Roland-Garros and ending up winning both to make it to the third. There he fought hard before falling to Alexander Zverev.

Switching over to grass, Nakashima hopped over to Britain to feature in the Surbiton Challenger where he won the first couple of rounds before going down to Andy Murray.

And while, like Paul, Nakashima is also yet to win a main draw match at the highest level on grass, he does seem to have a game for it. Starts off a 3/5 favourite to win this.

Paul v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

While Paul is the higher-ranked player, Nakashima looks like he will hold the edge and should carve out a three-set win over Paul in this one.

Tip: Nakashima to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
