Harriet Dart will be pleased with her opening match in Nottingham as she handed Donna Vekic a surprising defeat. The World No. 114, against rather high odds, overcame the Croat with 6-4, 6-3 in a little over an hour.
In what was a rare moment of success for Dart, she took the match after winning key points – despite an underwhelming service game.
This also marks the first time since Indian Wells that the Brit won a WTA match; since that fourth-round run where she dismissed Ana Konjuh, Elina Svitolina, and Kaia Kanepi as a qualifier, Dart failed to bag a single victory in every successive tournament – be it WTA or ITF.
Low on form and momentum, the 25-year-old will seek a revival in fortunes on home turf. But in a rather tricky bracket, that will be easier said than done.

Giorgi Back at her Career-High Ranking
Camila Giorgi arrived in Nottingham with a tally of 7-8 and although that doesn’t seem impressive, she will be more than pleased with how things have gone.
The Italian is back at her career-best ranking as World No. 26 – a feat she achieved after reaching the fourth round at the French Open (again, a career-best for her in Paris). It was a good performance by Giorgi who dismissed the likes of Shuai Zhang, Yulia Putintseva, and Aryna Sabalenka to make it that far.
This development and surge in the form are also quite interesting as Camila was on a six-match losing streak (barring her two wins in the Billie Jean King Cup).
But on the whole, she has a far superior pedigree when compared to Dart. With upper-tier tour experience and a decent record against the top 10 players, Giorgi is well-positioned for a good run here.

Giorgi is the clear favourite here but given her overall inconsistency this season, taking a gamble on Dart is not be the worst bet to make. On the safer side, this match may see a fair number of games.
