World no. 48 Beatriz Haddad Maia fought back from a set down to down China’s Wang Qiang and advance to the second round in Nottingham.
The 26-year-old Brazilian had started off well, breaking the Chinese in the first game of the match. But Wang came back in the set, breaking Haddad Maia twice to take the first set.
Haddad Maia got an early break in the second as well, but the world no. 146 broke back immediately to keep the set on serve. However, the Brazilian got the decisive second break to force the decider. Wang couldn’t break again in the match, while Haddad Maia broke her opponent twice to seal the contest 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and 20 minutes.
A semifinalist in Monterrey this year, the Brazilian has been in good form recently, reaching two WTA 125 finals last month, winning in Saint Malo and finishing runner-up in Paris.
She will be hoping to reach a second tour level quarterfinal of the season on Thursday.

Miyazaki Tops Fręch
In a surprise first round result, qualifier Yuriko Miyazaki topped World no. 92 Magdalena Frech on Tuesday.
The world no. 234 converted 4 of 12 break points and saved seven of 10 to win her first-ever tour-level main draw match.
The over two-hour contest saw Miyazaki beat the Polish player 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
This was a third consecutive three-set win for Miyazaki, who defeated Gabriela Lee 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 and 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the two qualifying rounds.
Miyazaki, who switched from Japan to Britain this year, won two of four ITF finals last year. Overall she is 4-4 in ITF finals. This is just her second singles main draw appearance following her first round exit from Lyon earlier this year.
Haddad Maia v Miyazaki Prediction and Tip
