Last year’s Wimbledon quarterfinalist Ajla Tomljanovic began her 2022 grass court season with a straight sets win over China’s Wang Xinyu.
The fifth seed dropped serve just once in the one hour and 15 minute contest, while she broke her opponent thrice during the match to advance with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
The 29-year-old Australian player improved her season record to 13-14, including qualifiers. On Thursday, she will be aiming to reach her third quarterfinal this year, following her runs to the last eight in Istanbul and Rabat.
Tomljanovic is a decent player on grass with an overall record of 30-24 across levels.
She will be aiming to reach the last eight in Nottingham for the second time. She had reached that far in the competition in 2019.

Boulter Fights Back to Beat Maria
Katie Boulter is a win away from reaching the quarterfinals in Nottingham for the third time in her career after the qualifier scored a comeback win over Germany’s Tatjana Maria in the first round on Tuesday.
The British player, ranked no. 136th in the world, was edged out in the first set. She made a resounding comeback in the second, breaking the German thrice to force the decider.
In the third, Maria was the first to break and go up 3-4. But Boulter bounced back immediately and won three games in a row to clinch the contest 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The 25-year-old had qualified for the main draw with wins over Liang En-shuo and Madison Inglis in the first and second qualifying rounds respectively. While the win over the former came in straight sets, she had to fight back from a set down to beat Inglis.
Boulter was a quarterfinalist in both her previous main draw appearances in Nottingham in 2018 and 2021. Can she make it three in three with a win on Thursday?
