Hurkacz Holds Off Cressy

World no. 12 Hubert Hurkacz held off a spirited Maxime Cressy in the first round of the Halle Open on Tuesday. This was the Polish player’s first win on grass this year after he lost his opening match in Stuttgart to Marton Fucsovics.

A Wimbledon semifinalist last year, Hurkacz got the solitary break of the first set to draw first blood. But it was Cressy, who tied things up in the second by breaking the Pole in the 10th game.

In the decider, both players held serve in the first six games. But it was Hurkacz who broke the American in an 11-deuce seventh game to surge ahead. Once ahead in the last set, he made sure not to drop serve again in the match and completed a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

The 25-year-old, who improved the season record to 24-11, had lost both his previous matches in Halle. He will now be looking to reach a fifth quarterfinal of the season.

Humbert Outlasts Albot

After losing the first set in the tiebreak, the French left-hander saved a match point at 5-6 (30-40) in the second set, before taking the set in the tiebreak and forcing the decider. Neither player lost serve in the first 11 games of the third set, but it was Humbert who got the decisive break in the final game to win the match 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.

The two hour and 42 minutes match saw HUmbert win 82% first serve points. There were a total of 231 points played with Humbert winning 119 points.

With the victory, the 23-year-old improved his season record to 5-13. He has now extended his unbeaten run in Halle to 6-0, can he keep that streak going on Wednesday?
