Strong Start for Cirstea
Sorana Cirstea started off her grass season with a strong win over Shelby Rogers. The American played rather well last week in Den Bosch so this was a notable coup in her first match on grass of the season.
It was a 2-hour battle where Cirstea won the opening set, lost the 2nd and then smashed her opponent 6-1 in the final one. Fairly decent performance overall although more double faults (4) than aces (3). Nothing unusual for WTA tennis but Cirstea was very confident when she hit her first serve.
On her 2nd, she was shakier winning only 50 % of those with only one of four break points saved as well. She was very good when she had break points converting 6/8. All in all, a very good start for her. Stylistically, grass fits her rather well although she doesn’t have a superb winning percentage on the surface.
It mostly comes down to how consistent she plays. If she’s good she can do well on all surfaces.

Big Win Over Martic For Krunic
Petra Martic has never been a spectacular player on grass yet the Croatian has been fairly consistent this year with some solid performances. Beating her is never easy and Krunic was able to exorcise a couple of demons in this one. She’s generally always been a fairly good grass player but this win was great.
It was a close match so she could have easily lost it especially since she trailed 2-4 in the opening set that she won with 6-4. She was pretty good on her serve winning both the first serve and the 2nd serve at a high percentage.
One of the underrated stats from this matchup was that she had a better winning percentage on her 2nd serve than her first. That could come in handy against an attacker like Cirstea. It’s hard seeing Krunic winning the aggression battle in that one so she will need to be strong on her serve.
She converted all three of her break points so that’s another thing to watch.
Cirstea v Krunic Prediction and Tip
There is no question that Cirstea is the better player. It’s not even close. Krunic has the better winning percentage on grass and that matters. Players don’t usually learn to play on grass but Cirstea has been fairly solid on the surface over the years.
For her, it’s confidence and consistency and she showed both. I don’t see a reason why she might falter against Krunic but you never know. The Serbian is a big fighter and eventually, Cirstea might feel the pressure. I back her to pass the test though.
