Cirstea Humbles Krunic

After needing three sets to edge past America’s Shelby Rogers in the opening round, Sorana Cirstea breezed past Serbian qualifier Aleksandra Krunic in straight sets to reach her first grass court quarterfinal since Mallorca in 2016.

This is also the second time that the Romanian will be featuring in the last eight in Birmingham.

Dominating the second round contest from start to finish, Cirstea converted five of 14 break points and saved the only one that she faced to defeat Krunic 6-1, 6-1 in just 72 minutes.

The 32-year-old, who has struggled on grass throughout her career, will now have a crack at a maiden semifinal spot on the surface. She is 0-3 quarterfinals on grass, but will aim for a first last eight win on Friday.

Vekic Knocks Out McNally

2013 Birmingham finalist Donna Vekic reached a second consecutive quarterfinal in the tournament by defeating Caty McNally in the second round on Wednesday.

Vekic, who had qualified for the main draw with back-to-back straight set wins over Britain’s Katie Swan and Romania’s Gabriela Lee respectively, is yet to drop a set this week.

The World No. 92 had beaten CoCo Vandeweghe 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round.

On Wednesday, Vekic saved four of six break points and converted 5 of 11 to knock out American McNally 7-5, 6-3. In both the sets, Vekic seemed to be cruising to victory, but McNally came back with a break. However, it was the Croatian who steadied her self on both the occasions and sailed into the next round.

Cirstea v Vekic Prediction and Tip

Cirstea is higher-ranked and also the seeded player, but she has had very few good runs on grass. In contrast, Vekic is a much better player on grass courts and has delivered consistent results on the surface. Expect a good contest with Vekic advancing.
