Shuai Zhang v Camila Osorio Head to Head

They played once before and Osorio won that match in Belgrade last year on clay.

Good Play From Zhang

Shuia Zhang has played very strong grass tennis since coming to the surface. The Chinese player has one title (in doubles) and is 5-q on the surface with two quarterfinals in Nottingham and Birmingham. In Nottingham, it was Tereza Martincova who proved better with Birmingham still yet to be played.

It’s no wonder that Zhang is a very good grass player because she moves very well. The serve is good enough and her volleying is, well, she’s top 1o in doubles so you do the math. Traditionally she’s been solid on the surface in the past as well.

It’s been a pretty good year for Zhang with one trophy in the singles and an 18-15 record on the year. If we remove her 2-6 record on clay she’s actually 16-9 on the year so that’s very good. Recent weeks allowed her to build a lot of confidence so she will travel to Eastbourne certain of her capabilities.

It remains to be seen how far she goes in Birmingham because of rain yesterday, she will have to play two matches in a day today and that might be enough to sway her not to play here.

Osorio Still Not Good On Grass

Camila Osorio grew up in Colombia and it’s quite possible she never saw a proper grass court before. The Colombian is a strong clay player because she grew up on that surface and all her instincts are tied to that. She can be dangerous on hard courts because of her aggressive and attacking play.

On grass it doesn’t work that well, or at all. She’s 5-4 on the surface but that stat is a bit misleading. She won two matches at Wimbledon last year but it came after a superb run of form that she never quite found again that year. This she’s played far worse having only an 11-9 record on the year.

She’s looked shaky even on clay and the two matches on grass she played this year have not been pretty either. To be fair, she played two players far better on the surface than her but that’s exactly what she’s facing with Zhang. Osorio will eventually become a solid grass player because her groundstrokes are flat.

They fly quickly through the air with very little spin and that works on this surface. She just needs a bit more playing time on it.

Zhang v Osorio Prediction and Tip

So for me, this is simple. If Zhang was a worse player for Osorio I would have backed the Colombian despite her woeful grass level. Not only is she not a worse player than Osorio, she’s actually the better player at the moment with a better year overall and generally a higher level on grass.

With all of that in mind, I see no reason not to back Zhang here. She might be a bit fatigued but if she is she won’t play this event. If she chooses to play she will be good to go.
