Flipkens Tops Zanevska
Former World no. 13 Kirsten Flipkens, who is set to retire after this year’s Wimbledon, made a solid start in Eastbourne, knocking out fellow Belgian Maryna Zanevska in the first round.
Ranked no. 257, Flipkens had qualified for the main draw with a straight sets win over Kristina Mladenovic on Saturday and a three-set comeback win over Viktoriya Tomova on Sunday.
On Monday’s opener, Flipkens saved 2 of 5 break points and converted 6 of 8 to win the 72-minute contest 6-2, 6-3.
The 36-year-old Belgian, who was a Wimbledon semifinalist in 2013, is in good form on grass this season. She had reached the quarterfinals in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, defeating Anastasia Tikhonova and Ann Li before falling to Shelby Rogers.
