Shelby Rogers bounced back after losing the first set on Sunday to down the Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova in three.
Rogers, who was able to hold serve just once in the first set, was broken thrice by her opponent who took a one-set lead. The American clawed her way back into the match, getting the solitary break of the second and tying things up at 1-set all.
In a closely contested third set, both players held serve over the first four games, but five consecutive breaks followed with Rogers in the box seat. Serving for the match at 5-4, she held her nerves and closed out the contest 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 22 minutes.
With the win, Rogers improved to 4-2 on grass this season. She had made it to the semifinals in ‘s-Hertogenbosch but lost the opener at the Birmingham Classic last week. Having safely gone past the first round, she will be fancying her chances against the lucky loser on Tuesday.

Tomova Gets Lucky
Viktoriya Tomova wasn’t suppose to be in the main draw in Eastbourne after she lost her second qualifying round to Kirsten Flipkens on Sunday.
But as luck would have it, Ons Jabeur pulled out of singles to focus on doubles, where she partners with Serena Williams. As a result of which Tomova got into the main draw as a lucky loser and what’s more she even received Jabeur’s bye and will be competing in the second round directly.
The 27-year-old Bulgarian had beaten Anna Danilina 6-1, 6-2 in the first qualifying round and then lost to Flipkens 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.
