Yulia Putintseva moved into the third round of the Eastbourne International with a straight sets win over Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo on Monday.
The Kazakh, seeded No. 16th in the tournament, had a first round bye. She didn’t get off to a great start in her second round match, as Sorribes Tormo got a break in the very first game of the match. Putintseva pulled the break back in the fourth game only to see the Spaniard break once again and restore the advantage.
But Putintseva broke back immediately and then got a third break to seal the first set. The 27-year-old Kazakh raced to a 4-0 lead in the second. She was broken once by Sorribes Tormo, but a third break in the set put the match out of the Spaniard’s reach.
The 7-5, 6-1 victory improved Putintseva to 10-8 this season. Although she has an ordinary 9-16 record on grass, Monday’s win would give her a lot of confidence and she will be eager to build on the start on Wednesday.

Kalinina Upsets Sakkari
Anhelina Kalinina stunned third seed Maria Sakkari in the second round on Tuesday to continue her march in the tournament.
The World no. 36, who had come into the tournament with a 1-2 record on grass this season, has now improved to 3-2 on the surface this year. A win on Wednesday will earn her a spot in a first grass court quarterfinal.
Kalinina had begun her Eastbourne campaign with a win over Sorana Cirstea. The Ukrainian was leading 6-0, 2-1 when the Romanian withdrew from the contest with an injury.
The Madrid and Charleston quarterfinalist added another win on Tuesday, rallying after losing the first set to upset the World no. 5 Sakkari 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Both players broke each other four times in the match and Sakkari won two more points than Kalinina’s 90 in the contest, but the Ukrainian won the key moments to advance.
Putintseva v Kalinina Prediction and Tip
Putintseva has won both their previous meetings and that should give her the psychological edge. Expect the Kazakh to progress to the quarterfinal after a tough win.
