Cilic in Brilliant Form

2017 Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic heads to this year’s tournament in top form. The Croatian, who was a semifinalist at Roland Garros this year, featured in just one grass court tournament in the build up to the third major of the season and picked up some decent results to stay in good form.

Cilic defeated Liam Broady, Alexander Bublik and Emil Ruusuvuori to reach the semifinals at the Queen’s Club, but his run ended with a straight sets defeat to Filip Krajinovic.

Having started the season as World No. 30, the former No. 3 has made steady progress this year and is currently ranked No. 17 in the world. He has a 21-13 season record, which includes four semifinal appearances.

A player with a huge reputation on grass courts, Cilic is 80-32 on the surface and has won three titles from six finals on grass. The 33-year-old has a stellar 31-13 record at Wimbledon. He had finished runner-up to Roger Federer in 2017 and was a quarterfinalist in 2014, 2015 and 2016. He could only reach as far as the third round last year, before being halted by Daniil Medvedev.

Such has been his form that there are huge expectations from him this year. He faces a potential fourth round against Rafael Nadal, which could be a cracking contest.

It will be interesting to see how far the 2014 U.S. Open champion can go this year.

McDonald Had Reached the Fourth Round in 2018

Mackenzie McDonald has a 2-3 record on grass this season and the 27-year-old is 7-7 overall on the surface.

The American lost the opener at the Rosmalen Open to Ilya Ivashka, but won his first round matches in Halle and Mallorca, beating Marc-Andrea Huesler and João Sousa respectively. However he couldn’t go beyond the second round in either of the tournaments with Felix Auger-Aliassime stopping him in Halle and Marcos Giron defeating him in Mallorca.

Ranked no. 52, McDonald has a 14-16 record this season. This will be his third main draw appearance at Wimbledon, where he has a 3-2 record.

McDonald enjoyed a great run on his Wimbledon debut in 2018, reaching the fourth round of the tournament. In his second appearance last year, he was knocked out by Karen Khachanov in the first round after coming through the qualifying rounds.

A finalist at the Washington Open last year, McDonald had reach just one quarterfinal this year, in Dubai. Can he pull off an upset in the first round?
