Gaston to Make Wimbledon Debut

Hugo Gaston will be making his Wimbledon debut this year. The left-handed Frenchman, who lost in the qualifiers last year, has a 2-1 record on grass this year.

Gaston reached the quarterfinals of the Rosmalen Open, defeating Kwon Soon-woo and Jenson Brooksby in the first two rounds, but lost in the last eight stage to Tim van Rijthoven. He was beaten by Britain’s Liam Broady in the first qualifying round in Eastbourne.

The 21-year-old World no. 65 has an overall record of 8-11 this season, with his best being third round finishes in Miami and Roland Garros.

A finalist in Gstaad last year, Gaston reached four Challenger finals in 2021, but couldn’t win any of them.

While he is a better player on clay and hard courts, he may find the going tough on grass.

World no. 83 Alexei Popyrin has been playing well on grass courts this season. Although he has not featured in a tour level event, he has a 7-4 record from his three Challenger events.

Popyrin lost in the opening round in Surbiton, but reached the final four stage in Nottingham and Ilkley. In the latter, he had made the main draw as a lucky loser and then won three matches before falling to Zizou Bergs in the semifinals.

The 22-year-old, who won the Singapore Open title last year, will be playing in Wimbledon for the third time. he had won his opening match on debut, but hasn’t won another match in the tournament.

On the tour, he has an overall record of 3-10 in 2022.

He most recently played Gaston at the Hurlingham exhibition and was beaten convincingly by the Frenchman. But despite the result in the exhibition, he will fancy his chances in the opener, given how he has performed in the Challenger tournaments on grass.
