Sabalenka v Anisimova Head to Head

This is going to be the first time that Sabalenka will meet the World No. 87 on the tour.

Sabalenka’s Excellent Start to the Season

The Belarusian No. 1 started her year by participating in the WTA Shenzhen, where she won the competition after defeating Alison Riske in the final. That win propelled her to the No. 11 position in the world – her best singles ranking.

She has carried that momentum to Melbourne as well. In the first round, she defeated the Russian qualifier Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets. She then moved on to meet the British player Katie Boulter next and produced a similar result there as well. Having reached the third round at the Australian Open, she has already surpassed her previous year’s result in the tournament.

The 11th seed rose to prominence last season on the back of a sensational performance. She was a runner-up at the WTA Lugano and Eastbourne and later moved to win big in Connecticut and Wuhan.

Anisimova’s Maiden Australian Open Appearance

The 17-year-old is playing for the first time at the Melbourne Park and so far, she has done an exceptional job. To begin with, she edged past the veteran Romanian player Monica Niculescu in straight sets. Thereafter, she met the 24th seeded Ukranian Lesia Tsurenko, whom she defeated 6-0, 6-2.

Anisimova was absolutely ruthless in that match. She won six break points out of a possible 10, saved four break points herself in the process and produced 24 winners. It is fair to say that she is playing some of the best tennis of her young career so far in the tournament.

She started her season in Auckland where she was a quarterfinalist. Last season, the youngster had a brilliant run in the WTA Japan Open in Hiroshima, where she started as a qualifier and emerged as the runner-up. That performance propelled her into the top 100.

Sabalenka v Anisimova – Who Will Win?

Sabalenka and Anisimova are evenly matched for this fixture. They are heading into this fixture on the back of similar starts and both have been quite brilliant so far. Anisimova is the player to watch out for – she defeated Petra Kvitova at the Indian Wells last year. She has what it takes to win big and it will be interesting to see if she can deliver an upset here as well.

Sabalenka to win in three sets.
