Thiem Shows Nerves of Steel In First Round

Dominic Thiem played an excellent game of tennis in the first round against exciting Frenchman Hugo Gaston in the first round. Gaston took the first set 6-1, and Thiem was able to reverse the score line in the second set.

The third set was a neck to neck encounter and at 6-5 on Thiem’s serve, Gaston was 0-30 up. Thiem threw down his biggest serves of the match to hold to 6-6. The tie break had multiple momentum shifts and ultimately Thiem had to save match point to win the match.

The former world number 3 took a lot of time to get used to the conditions. Once he did, his ground strokes were coming off really well.

His main positive from the match will be how well he served, and the crucial junctures in which he landed his big first serves.
