There is no head to record between the two as they will face off for the first time.

2015 Gstaad Champion Thiem Reaches Quarterfinal

Dominic Thiem is showing great signs of a comeback to his peak level as he secures a second consecutive quarterfinal in two weeks, first in Bastad and now in Gstaad.

Thiem defeated Federico Delbonis 7-6(6), 6-3 in the second round in what was a much more difficult match than the score line suggests. Delbonis was 5-2 up in the first set tie break but Thiem showed a brilliant level to win from there.

The Austrian has now won 4 of his last 5 matches, his best form this year. He was out for almost 12 months due to a wrist injury sustained in Mallorca in 2021.

Thiem had lost to eventual champion Sebastian Baez in the Bastad quarterfinal. In Gstaad, he won in the first round against Hugo Gaston in three sets after taking time to adjust to the conditions.

The most important positive for the 2020 US Open Champion from the match against Delbonis is that it is the first two setter he has played in the past two weeks. All his previous matches since Bastad had gone to three sets.

The former world number 3 is nearing his best and will be looking to book a semifinal spot in a place he won the title 7 years ago.

Varillas On Strong Run From Qualifiers

Juan Pablo Varillas is making his best run this year as he reached the quarterfinal starting out from the qualifying draw. Having dominated the clay challengers in the past two years, a deeper run could be his major breakthrough story.

The Peruvian is 26-13 on clay this season, and importantly reached the first round of the French Open by winning three qualifiers. He is currently ranked 115, 11 places below his career high rank of 104.

Varillas defeated Lorenzo Sonego in the first round here in Gstaad. He then went on to cause a major upset by defeating Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets, 7-6 (3), 7-5.

The coaching team of Varillas could argue he is in his best form of his life and it is probably one of the better moments to face Thiem in order to seal a semifinal spot.

Varillas is 26 years of age and despite winning an extraordinary number of matches at the challenger level, he has unable to break into the ATP tour. This year seems like the year he can break into the top 100 and play at this level more regularly.

Thiem v Varillas Prediction and Tip

This is a very tricky match for Thiem as Varillas is playing fearless tennis and the Austrian has accumulated a lot of playing time on court in the past two weeks. However Thiem has been serving at a world class level and that could be the difference in this even battle.

Tip: Thiem to win: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
