Berrettini Makes a Winning Return
Picking up from where he left, Matteo Berrettini ousted Richard Gasquet in straight sets on Thursday to make it to the last eight in Gstaad.
The second seed, who had to miss this year’s Wimbledon after testing positive for COVID-19, had won back-to-back titles in Stuttgart and Queen’s just before the start of the grass court major.
On Thursday, the Italian saved both the break points the he faced and converted 2 of 7 to win the one-hour-and-30-minute contest 6-4, 6-4.
Berretini has now won 10 matches in a row taking his season record to 19-6. But while the 2021 Wimbledon runner-up has been brilliant on grass, he missed out the entire European clay season, including the French Open due to a hand injury, which needed a surgery.
The Italian, who made the semifinals at the Australian Open, was a quarterfinalist in Rio in his only clay court appearance this year. He has a decent overall record on clay though, where he has won three titles, including the one he won in Gstaad in 2018.
Thursday’s win improved Berrettini to 6-0 in Gstaad.

Martinez Edges Past Ymer
Fifth seed Pedro Martinez won consecutive matches for the first time since his third round appearance in Miami in March to reach the quarterfinals of the Swiss Open.
The World no. 52, who defeated fellow Spaniard Carlos Taberner 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round, needed two hours and 53 minutes to beat Elias Ymer on Thursday and reach a quarterfinal for the second time this year.
The first time he made it to the last eight in 2022, he went on to win his maiden ATP title by beating Sebastian Baez in the Chile Open final.
The 25-year-old Spaniard saved 7 of 10 break points and converted 5 of 9 to beat the Swede 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 on Thursday.
With the win, Martinez is now 16-16 for the season and will be hoping to score an upset and keep the winning run going on Friday. But he will have his task cut out against the World no. 15.
Berrettini v Martinez Prediction and Tip
Having cruised past Gasquet in the opening round, Berrettini would be feeling good about his game. Expect the second seed to keep the streak going with another win on Friday.
