Matteo Berrettini escaped elimination in the quarterfinal on Friday to extend his unbeaten streak to 11 matches.
A champion in Stuttgart and Queen’s, the Italian missed the Wimbledon after testing positive for COVID-19. But he has made a winning return to tennis, winning the first two matches in Gstaad and improving his tournament record to 7-0.
The 2018 Swiss Open champion was in deep trouble on Friday as his quarterfinal opponent Pedro Martinez took the first set 6-3 and then led the second set tiebreak 1-5. But Berrettini wasn’t going down without a fight as he turned the tables on the Spaniard, winning six points in a row to force the decider.
He took control of the match from that point on and broke his opponent thrice in the final set for a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 victory.
The second seed, who had a first-round bye, had defeated Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round. He will now be aiming to reach a third straight final with a win on Saturday.

Thiem Reaches First SF in Over an Year
Facing Berretinni will be a resurgent Dominic Thiem, who reached his first semifinal since his final four appearance in Madrid last year.
The Austrian, who has not played much this season due to his injury, defeated Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets in the quarterfinal on Friday. Currently ranked No. 274, the former No. 3 needed an hour and 45 minutes to beat the Peruvian 6-4, 6-3.
Thiem, who registered his first two tour-level wins of the season in Bastad last week, had begun his Gstaad campaign with a come-from-behind win over seventh seed Hugo Gaston.
He then ousted Argentina’s Federico Delbonis in straight sets to make it to the quarterfinals for the second straight tournament.
Friday’s win was his fifth victory of the season. Can he keep the winning run going?
