Ruud Routs Ramos-Vinolas

Casper Ruud is back in a final. The World No. 5, who had a poor run in the past three tournaments, reached a fifth final of the season, defeating Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas in straight sets on Saturday.

The top seed Norwegian dominated the contest from start to finish to trounce the fourth seed 6-2, 6-0. Ruud didn’t face a single break point in the contest, while he converted 5 of 7 to wrap up the semifinal in just 63 minutes.

This will be Ruud’s first appearance in a final since finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros. In other finals this year, Ruud triumphed in Buenos Aires and Geneva and finished runner-up in Miami. As a result of all the stellar performances, the 23-year-old is 24-7 on clay and 34-13 overall this year.

He began his Gstaad challenge with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jiri Lehecka in the second round and followed it up with a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4) win over Jaume Munar in the quarterfinal on Friday

Berrettini Cruises Into Third Consecutive Final

Matteo Berrettini’s hot streak continued as he reached a third consecutive final with a straight sets drubbing of Dominic Thiem in the semifinal  on Saturday.

The second seed Italian, who survived a quarterfinal scare against fifth seed Pedro Martinez on Friday, needed just an hour and 18 minutes to beat the Austrian 6-1, 6-4.

The World No. 15 made a quick start, racing to a 5-0 lead before Thiem could win his opening game. Berrettini wrapped up the set in the next game and then built a 5-2 lead in the second before dropping serve in the eighth game. But he regrouped quickly to clinch the contest 6-1, 6-4 and move into a third straight final.

He won the title in both his previous two tournaments in Stuttgart and Queen’s but couldn’t participate in the third major of the season after he tested positive for COVID-19.

Coming back on the tour after a month’s absence, the Italian picked up from where he left. He began his Gstaad challenge with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Richard Gasquet in the second round and then edged out Martinez 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in the quarterfinal.

The Italian is 21-6 this season and will be chasing an eighth title in his 11th tour-level final on Sunday. He is on a 12-match unbeaten run. Can he keep the streak going in the final?
